Values We Live By

America has lots of values and each one is important in their own way. Some of them are what we follow with the laws while others applies to for our personal lives or our family. But in other regions or foreign countries, our values and laws are way different from theirs and might misunderstand us. But we’re here to talk about 2 values that are part of our society and those are Time, which is when you decide what to do with it, and Individual/Privacy, which is when you have personal space to yourself and is where you cherish someone special to you. And not only that; they are always reference in books, games, and television; and speaking of books, here is the first paragraph.

TKAM talks about a girl name Jean Louise “Scout” Finch where she tells us about her childhood and the ups and downs with it. But we’re not here to talk about the whole books, but to compare it with Individual/Privacy and there tons of example. One is Individual where in chapter 15, Scout, Jem, and Dill goes to the jail house and see a lynch mob telling Atticus, Scout and Jem father, to let Tom Robison, a black man whose Atticus defending claiming he innocent, go and let them hang them before they hurt Atticus. But Scout wouldn’t allow that and ran out to save her father and convince the mob to leave and go home. Scout loves her father and would do anything to protect him and the rest of the family. There is also a example of Privacy where in chapter 11 Jem needed time to himself because he destroy Mrs. Dubose flowers and Scout baton and hurts her in the process. I could go on and on with more examples of these values, but these 2 example are important because Scout sometimes have adult mind and Jem growing up are the changes they have in the next few chapters because of Atticus said to them. What I think about this values is that applies to me because I like my stuff private and don’t let anybody and also goes in depressing sometimes and I just need some time to clear my mind and move forward. I also too would anything to protect my family and friends because they’re the ones who encourages me to stand back up and try again.

“Americans tend to think they have been only slightly influence by family , church or schools” (Robert Kohls,3). Some Americans actually are influenced by their families , church , or school. Some people get influenced by it because they grew up in the environment       of going to school , church , and being with their families. Most Americans look up to their parents and get influenced by what they do. Some Americans aren’t influence by their parents and choose their own values to live by because they are different and interested in something else.

My understanding of self-help is something you do on your own to make yourself a better person. Atticus proved his numerous abilities and intelligence. He also was known as the best checker player in Maycomb , Alabama. Atticus was good at a lot of things. Some stuff he was known for his kids  didn’t know he accomplished.

In the book To Kill a Mockingbird , Atticus displayed Honesty. Atticus is respected by a lot of people in Maycomb , Alabama. He was always honest / open to his kids when his kids when they ask questions. Like when Scout asked about if Mr. Cunningham will pay him back , Atticus told her that he will , but ” not in money ” and tell them because the depression had hit the Cunninghams the hardest. (  E.NotesTKAM). The Great Depression was a big downturn in History during (1929-39).

Many Americans lost a lot , and became unemployed. The great depression had began after the stock market  crashed of October. So I see why the Cunninghams couldn’t pay back in cash because the Great depression was going on during the time. The Cunninghams pay Atticus back with goods from their farms , because they were poor , and it was a bad time for farmers.

In Requiem for the American Dream , the man Noam  Chomsky had said “If you were born poor you had to work hard.” I read an article on huff post.com about a American man who upbringing lacked sufficient money to live at a standard considered comfortable in society. He had to work two jobs full time because he had two kids to provide for and take care of. He also had rent to pay. Later he got real ill because he wasn’t sleeping enough, barley eating, but was drinking coffee to keep him up.

After the Hospital visit they informed him he would have to stay because he had congestive heart failure and bronchitis. After he was released from his Hospital stay a administrator position had open up at the college where he could make excellent money and to keep him from dying of exhaustion and stress. For the American man being poor and going through the struggle, being sick, and working very hard soon paid off in the end. The American man received a blessing to receive a great paying job. This gave the American man Hope, money to survive, better Health, money to provide for his kids, and a new begining at life. Americans who tend to grow up poor know they have to work hard and make a better life for themselves and family if they do not want to continue the cycle and stay poor. Work hard and your blessings will come. Never give up and keep fighting for your family and yourself.

Whenever you hear the word equality, what do you think of? Well, in ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’, the main characters, Finch, Jem, and Finch, all they learned about what this was exactly. Equality, back in this time, was very rare, unless it was for all the white people. Many colored people weren’t considered equal with anyone except their own kind. Harper Lee wrote To Kill A Mockingbird  during the time when equality was needed and racism was so high that many people didn’t know how to act except to not like the colored people.

Many families passed racism over and over to their family because they were rasied to not like colored people. People aren’t born racist they are taught to be. It’s all for a reason many people have different reasons.Nowadays, since most racism is gone, everyone is kind to each other, and we all have equality, together as humans. To Kill A Mockingbird was and is still the greatest book but why? It shows how equality was a struggling back in those times, and how just a small change can make a big impact on the world.

During the requiem American dream it was sort of like if you had wealth you had power also. In the film the main concern was to “Protect the minority of the opulent against the opulent against the majority.” Everyone had to be able to vote freely. Also what was mentioned that the poor wanted to organized to take the property from the rich. What does this have to do with the future? Some people hope in the future well want to reduce the democracy. Today people should have the opportunity and be able to have equal rights.

What is one value many Americans live by? I would most definitely say  Self-help. Because nowadays many people would rather do things on their own without anyone’s help. Like for an example Alisha would rather use a map then ask people for directions. She doesn’t need anyone help when she has an map. Makes much sense when you just to do it on your own.

I also live by that value too. I don’t like asking people for help some people react differently. Sometimes for an example if I need help I’ll try to do it on my own. If I feel like I’m not doing something right I’ll at least try afterwards ask adult or student that knows what they are talking about to help me with my work. That’s why I think it’s very important we should live by these values.
