In To Kill a Mockingbird there are examples of time. In chapter eight on page sixty-three, there is an example, “We had two weeks of the coldest weather since 1885, Atticus said.” This in an example of time because he said how long ago the weather has been so cold and how long the weather lasted. “She wants me to come every afternoon after school and Saturdays and read to her out loud for two hours.” This is another example of time from TKAM on page 105. It relates to time because he said how long the woman wants him to read to her.

The short film Requiem for the American Dream, there are examples of future orientation. In the short film Noam chumsky was talking about the presidential election and the new laws the government might plan on making in the future. The government carries out actions. The government has the ability to change prices and income. Changing prices and income can change peoples financial lives in the future.

“Americans believe that competition brings out the best in any individual.” You could relate this to any sport. In sports each team tries their best to win the game, such as basketball and football. In football, one team has to compete with another team. Each team try to get as many touch downs as they can. The team with the most touch downs win the game. In basketball the teams try to shoot the ball in the goal to get the team’s score higher. The team with the highest score wins the game. Playing sports are examples of competition.

I believe action/work orientation means you have only a certain amount of time to rest. Some people have to work full time at their job and they don’t get that much sleep. I think action/work orientation means that because in the passage, The Values Americans Live By, by L. Robert kohls says, “Any relaxation must be limited in time preplanned, and aimed at recreating their ability to work harder and more productively once the recreation is over.”

“Americans tend to think they have been only slightly influence by family , church or schools” (Robert Kohls,3). Some Americans actually are influenced by their families , church , or school. Some people get influenced by it because they grew up in the environment       of going to school , church , and being with their families. Most Americans look up to their parents and get influenced by what they do. Some Americans aren’t influence by their parents and choose their own values to live by because they are different and interested in something else.

My understanding of self-help is something you do on your own to make yourself a better person. Atticus proved his numerous abilities and intelligence. He also was known as the best checker player in Maycomb , Alabama. Atticus was good at a lot of things. Some stuff he was known for his kids  didn’t know he accomplished.

In the book To Kill a Mockingbird , Atticus displayed Honesty. Atticus is respected by a lot of people in Maycomb , Alabama. He was always honest / open to his kids when his kids when they ask questions. Like when Scout asked about if Mr. Cunningham will pay him back , Atticus told her that he will , but ” not in money ” and tell them because the depression had hit the Cunninghams the hardest. (  E.NotesTKAM). The Great Depression was a big downturn in History during (1929-39).

Many Americans lost a lot , and became unemployed. The great depression had began after the stock market  crashed of October. So I see why the Cunninghams couldn’t pay back in cash because the Great depression was going on during the time. The Cunninghams pay Atticus back with goods from their farms , because they were poor , and it was a bad time for farmers.

In Requiem for the American Dream , the man Noam  Chomsky had said “If you were born poor you had to work hard.” I read an article on huff post.com about a American man who upbringing lacked sufficient money to live at a standard considered comfortable in society. He had to work two jobs full time because he had two kids to provide for and take care of. He also had rent to pay. Later he got real ill because he wasn’t sleeping enough, barley eating, but was drinking coffee to keep him up.

After the Hospital visit they informed him he would have to stay because he had congestive heart failure and bronchitis. After he was released from his Hospital stay a administrator position had open up at the college where he could make excellent money and to keep him from dying of exhaustion and stress. For the American man being poor and going through the struggle, being sick, and working very hard soon paid off in the end. The American man received a blessing to receive a great paying job. This gave the American man Hope, money to survive, better Health, money to provide for his kids, and a new begining at life. Americans who tend to grow up poor know they have to work hard and make a better life for themselves and family if they do not want to continue the cycle and stay poor. Work hard and your blessings will come. Never give up and keep fighting for your family and yourself.

Values Essay

Ms. Bryant / 7th Period

Values in the U.S.

The different types of values we have relate to lots of things like, “To Kill A Mockingbird”. The book is easy to relate to the “Values Americans Live By,” By, Robert Kohls, and I’m going to write about them. The most common values are the ones I’ll be relating to the book and other things.

In To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus is very open with his option. When he tell Jem “Son, I can’t tell what you’re going to be- an engineer, a lawyer, or a portrait painter. You’ve perpetrated a near libel here in the front yard.” He says that because Jem wanted to build a snowman, but didn’t know how. So when he came home from work and saw Jem had made it, he expressed the talent he thinks he have for doing so. He was so proud of him for making the snowman he was open about his many talents.

Atticus is also very practical and efficient, In To Kill A Mockingbird. He’s a very hard worker who never gives up and rises to the top when doing so. He also tries to make good decisions in sticky situations. “For God’s sake, Mr. Finch, look where he is! Miss and you’ll go straight into the Radley house! I can’t shoot that well and you know it!” Instead of getting nervous send doing something dumb because of the deadly dog, he stayed calm and shoot the dog, correctly. He waited until it was the perfect time to shot, and did it without messing up.

Jem and Scout use personal control over the environment to get things out of a knot-hole in the Radley’s lot in a tree. When they walk home from school they see things and take them, even though they don’t know whose it is. “From then on, we consider everything we found in the knot-hole our property.” “I pulled out two small images carved in soap.” They used the tree to get things they thought were cool or liked.

The movie Friday and it’s characters are another good example of personal control over the environment, when Smokey uses the earth to get high. When he smokes weed, he’s using the plants the earth provides, but twisting it around and smokes it. He says “Ain’t nothing wrong with smoking weed, weed is from the earth. God put this here to me , and you! Take advantage man, take advantage.” When he says that, he thinks it’s okay and that there suppose to make blunts from the plants that grow from the ground and get extremely high from it. Therefore, he’s using the environment around is to advantage and doing what he wants with what he gets from it.

In the movie The Pursuit of Happyness, Christopher Garden is very practical and efficient, about getting his son well taking care of sand off the streets. He works very hard to get this job in a very large office, since he started off as an intern, so he can provide for himself and also his son. I’m this movie, every decision he makes not only effect him, but his young son so he has to choose them carefully, so he does try to make the best decisions possible. He ends up in this position because of making not so smart decisions and using all of him and his wife’s money to invest in things that are no longer worth buying. So because of that, his wife leaves him and there child with no money or job. Chris works very hard at the job and ends up getting the job and making everything alright for him and his son.

Values

I am going to use requiem for the American Dream and To Kill a Mocking Bird. This will help define three of America’s values and, I will use outside sources.

One of the values is personal control over the environment. Over the years, we have built: cities, towns, workplaces, etc. We as people control how our world is formed. For example, things we do can change a lot of things, like pollution. Pollution kills lots of animals every year. In, To Kill a Mockingbird, some kids will grow up to be racist because of their parents.

Another value is time and its control. It is one of Americas most important values. Time is to be kept, on, wasted, spent, given, etc. Time controls us because everything we do is based on time. Your job could be lost because you weren’t on time. Another Example is, when NBA teams play most teams lose because they ran out of time, not because they were the worst team.

My last value is individualism and privacy. Some Americans are individualist but not all. Individualism is what makes us different. Privacy is something we all want, but we can’t get privacy all the time. When people put things on the internet those things are no longer private. If you post the wrong thing on social media it can never be erased. So, therefore your privacy is not an option anymore. Some kids lose scholarships, to colleges, because of something bad they posted on social media.

There is a movie called Free Birds, it’s when two turkeys from opposite sides of the tracks must team up to travel back in time to change the course of history, trying to get turkey off the Thanksgiving menu for good. (Instead of eating turkey people ate pizza). This movie relates to time and its control because when they time traveled everything changed in the present.

An outside source for our personal control over the environment is a movie called, After Earth. In this movie people polluted the earth to where it was not livable for humans. Every human on earth had to go to a unknown planet, where people had to live their forever.
